Musical instruments are usually made of wood, but materials like metal, leather etc. can also be used.

The Flute
fluiere
The most common musical instrument is the flute, which is connected with animal breeding, especially with sheep breeding.

The sound is obtained by completely covering, half covering or opening the lateral orifices, using the fingers. Thus the air vibrates in the tube.

The flute has three major forms. The places where flutes are manufactured are situated near the important sheep breeding centers from the mountains.

The flutes of the inhabitants of Apuseni Mountains (people are named “motzi”) are made only of wood, very rarely containing incisions. They are mostly twin flutes.

The flutes from Rodna and Calimani Mountains are decorated, especially at the extremities, with lead ornaments.

The Vaideeni and Ursani flutes are the most decorated. They are made of plum wood and are decorated on all their length (80 cm) with brass spirals and small geometrical motifs.

The Bagpipe

The bagpipe is composed of a goatskin in which the air is introduced by means of a small tube made of elder, metal or bone. On the opposite wall there are two regular flutes which communicate tightly with the inner side of the goatskin. The longer one is called “bazoi” and the smaller one “caraba”. The “bazoi” makes an uniform sound, which accompanies the whole song.

While the man plays the bagpipe, he squeezes the goatskin under his arm. Thus the air is pushed to the two flutes. The orifices of the “caraba” are manipulated as those of a regular flute.

The bagpipe has sculptural elements. The flutes are made of wood, often carved in geometrical shapes or in the shape of an animal’s head (usually a goat head).

The bagpipes are manufactured in the north-west of Walachia and in the curve area of Carpathian Mountains.

The Pan-Pipe

zamfir
An ancient musical instrument, the pan-pipe is composed by several tubes (usually 20) of different dimensions, made of reed, elder or other types of wood. These tubes are closed with wax corks at their bottom part and are opened in their upper part. On this part the player blows air, thus obtaining the sound.

The most famous Romanian pan-pipe player is Gheorghe Zamfir.

The Alpenhorn (the “Tulnic”)

The alpenhorn is a big tube, opened at both ends and composed of long staves of fir, ash, lime or nut tree wood, very well dry. These stoves are tightened with wooden or metal circles.

Of Roman origins, the alpenhorn is used by the mountain shepherds for signaling different things. In the Apuseni Mountain the alpenhorn is called “tulnic”.

In some regions it is played on the funerals.

In the past the alpenhorn was used for signaling the Turkish invasions.
